I would be useless to if I lost someone I love for the longest time. But now I'm getting it all back.

He literally just gave them the blueprints to make their own stuff. Once you have a completed version and the blueprints, reverse engineering is literally sooooo easy.

But this is an anime, and I doubt they would go down that level of intricacy, even if they have gotten close before

I don't think that it's that they can't figure out how to make them, but they don't have the level of skill to craft the weapons after the materials are processed. They would require a teacher to figure out how to assemble the pieces. Tang San, in his past life, spent his whole life training to assemble hidden weapons. Because of that, I think it makes sense.
